A Feminist Response to that Slate Essay

I don’t know if you remember that essay in Slate about evolution and rape. Some people were pretty mad about it! Today McSweeney’s posted this response, and I agree with a lot of what Schorn says. Like, if it were an evolutionary thing, wouldn’t women with the lowest rape defenses during ovulation be reproducing more? Just sayin.

What I find most compelling is her point that a woman doesn’t need to be ovulating–or have magical hormone rape armor–to defend herself. This article gives tips that are easier to follow than “always be ovulating”, and ends on the interesting speculation that maybe we should be looking at how men ended up with testicles–their most sensitive organs and those most critical for coerced intercourse–that sit outside of their body just WAITING to get hit and cause incapacitating pain.
