Queer Representation in Comic Books

Flavorwire posted this awesome chronology of gay comic book characters. The comments point out a couple of things that were left out–regrettably (but unsurprisingly) I read it and was like “This is so incomplete! They’re missing…hmm….uhhh…” They only really glaring omission is the world of indie comic books, which makes sense since that’s obviously a different ballpark. But if you’re looking for some awesome queer characters, I’d recommend the Scott Pilgrim books (WALLACE), Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home and Dykes to Watch Out For, and I Was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space.

  1. I hate the Young Avengers almost as much as I hate Wiccans, so whatever, no. 6.

The Gaylactic Spectrum Awards covers all the gay stuff (I think that’s what it’s called) in sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and maybe possibly sometimes comics. The google can help w/ details, plus wikipedia covers it in their “series on sex in speculative fiction.” i fucking love that that series exists.
